The talk will be about the manipulation of life. There will be a historical introduction to the subject, and a short explanation about the possibilities that modern biology and biotechnology offer today. Then I’ll show a little bit of the variety of approaches you have worldwide to biology as an art medium and them move to a more comprehensive description of some of my works.
—

Marta de Menezes is a Portuguese artist with a degree in Fine Arts by the University in Lisbon, and a MSt in History of Art and Visual Culture by the University of Oxford. She has been exploring the intersection between Art and Biology, working in research laboratories demonstrating that new biological technologies can be used as new art medium. In 1999 de Menezes created her first biological artwork (Nature?) by modifying the wing patterns of live butterflies. Since then, she has used diverse biological techniques including functional MRI of the brain to create portraits where the mind can be visualised (Functional Portraits, 2002); fluorescent DNA probesto create micro-sculptures in human cell nuclei (nucleArt, 2001); sculptures made of proteins (Proteic Portrait,2002), DNA (Innercloud, 2003) or incorporating live neurons (Tree of Knowledge, 2005). Her work has been presented internationally in exhibitions, articles and lectures. She is currently the artistic director of Ectopia, an experimental art laboratory within a biological research institute.

This talk will center on sound vibrations from natural systems both metaphoric and actual applied in three artworks that seek to create an experience though immersive, vibrational interactive environments. Through these works, I will argue that amplified inaudible vibrations are critical in media arts explorations. Mood Swings creates states of emotion and perception by translating the viewer’s body into a swarm of moving particles that change “moods” by radically audio and color vibrations. The piece was developed in close interaction with a psychiatric research group in UCLA who look at the relationship of sound pollution and depression. Cell Ghosts was inspired by a new cutting edge field of study coined as “sonocytology” by nanoscientist Gimzewski. This field represents a new realm of challenge and potential for scientists, artists, and in particular for musicians. The tool with which the cell sounds are extracted - the atomic force microscope (AFM) - can be regarded as a new type of musical instrument. Unlike microscopes that use optical imaging, the AFM “touches” a cell with its small tip, comparable to a record needle “feeling” the bumps in a groove on a record. With this interface, the AFM “feels” oscillations taking place at the membrane of a cell. These electrical signals are then amplified and used in the piece. This same technique was used to create the Blue Morph piece — raw data files of the caterpillar membrane “sound” vibrations were sped up and amplified to reveal that metamorphosis does not happen gradually as we would like to imagine. This is experienced in a site specific installation that immerses the participants in blue color and vibrations of metamorphosis.

—

Victoria Vesna is a media artist, professor at the department of Design | Media Arts at the UCLA School of the Arts. She is also director of the recently established UCLA Art|Sci center and the UC Digital Arts Research Network. Her work can be defined as experimental creative research that resides between disciplines and technologies. She explores how communication technologies affect collective behavior and how perceptions of identity shift in relation to scientific innovation. Her most recent installations — Blue Morph, Mood Swings and Water Bowls, all aim to raise consciousness around the issues of our relationship to natural systems. Other notable works are Bodies INCorporated, Datamining Bodies, n0time and Cellular Trans_Actions.

Victoria has exhibited her work in 18 solo exhibitions, over 70 group shows, published 20+ papers and gave a 100+ invited talks in the last decade. She is recipient of many grants, commissions and awards, including the Oscar Signorini award for best net artwork in 1998 and the Cine Golden Eagle for best scientific documentary in 1986. Vesna’s work has received notice in numerous publications such as Art in America, National Geographic, the Los Angeles Times, Spiegel (Germany), The Irish Times (Ireland), Tema Celeste (Italy), and Veredas (Brazil) and appears in a number of book chapters on media arts. She holds a PhD from the University of Wales and is he North American editor of AI & Society and author of Database Aesthetics.

TEKS is in collaboration with ITovation, a series of seminars for PhD-students, researchers and students focusing on innovation, creativity and improvisation at NTNU, arranging an art competition for 5×2 meter LED wall.

Professor Letizia Jaccheri will be presenting the project and the prize winners!

Concept

The artist perspective for the contest is to exploit the artistic potential of possible technologies that can be implemented in the The Open Wall. Boundaries between digital art expressions and computer gaming are vanishing. We will in particular ask the contesters to investigate in artistic concepts that applies to the wall being an interactive and “living” object.

We aim at raising awareness and curiosity about multidisciplinary issues at the intersection between art and technology. Artistic expressions for the contest may look into ways of establishing interactive dialogs between an audience at sight or/and remote located, and the LED wall.

Project contributions can be expressed as a combination of sensor and actuator technologies that by example reads data from sources like sound, movement, climate, GPS, social mapping etc., as well as other methods for fetching external data information. Actuators in addition to the LEDs, if you find that necessary for your project, can be anything from sound output to robotic technologies. Your imagination is the limit!

The suggested artistic concept and content will be the jury’s main factor to consider. This means that though the technical aspects are vital for realizing this project, the contest will focus on the artistic concepts and ideas. We are therefore accepting contributions where the techniques necessary for realizing your project aren’t fully developed or in detail described. The jury expects nevertheless all technologies suggested by the contesters to be technical realizable.

The Open Wall project provides an interface for exploring possibilities for further development of artistic expressions used for permanent public installations. This contest is part of Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre´s strategy for trying to develop permanent interactive installations in the public space of the Trondheim region. The Open Wall can therefore be considered as a fragment of a greater installation. As this is a concept competition, we accept contributions that aren’t limited in size to this particular physical wall as such.

Contesters will have the opportunity to start a dialog with Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre independently of the contest result for further development of projects.

Prizes

The prize award will take place at this year’s festival for art and technology in Trondheim, Trondheim Matchmaking, the 16th - 18th of October.

The contest is divided in two prize categories:

- The Open Wall open contest.

1st prize 2000 €, 2nd prize 1500 €, 3rd prize 1000 €.

- The Open Wall student contest.

In addition to automatically participate in the open contest, contributions from NTNU students will be separately evaluated free of the guidelines for the Open Contest. Innovative technologies, outstanding use of tech tools and playful interactions are welcomed. Surprise the jury!

3 prizes of 2000 NOK each.

The jury

The jury consist of five members:

* Stacey Spiegel, Artist, President, Parallel World Labs Inc
* Trine Eidsmo, Artist, Director, Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre
* Per Platou, Artist, Coordinator, The Production Network of Electronic Arts Norway
* Bjørn Alterhaug, professor, Department for Music, NTNU
* Letizia Jaccheri, professor, Department of Computer and Information Science, NTNU

Mixing eye-catching experimental audiovisual art with dynamic distorted idm-beats, incite/ are criss-crossing art and club worlds, creating intense experiences for ears and eyes.

Duocentric chemistry and most precise audiovisual imageneering in total sync with bone-dry fragmented idm grooves and broken rhythmic arrangements makes up the unique quality of incite/´s highly authentic style:
Fragmented electric junk and fragile bursts of static noise meet with extra-charged sub-bass-kicks in impressive conjunction with the intensity of the meticulously constructed visuals and physical presence of the duo within their projected image.

Since 2003, live shows were the main focus of incite/. From April 03 through October 2008, Kera and André have played far more than 100 gigs: tours in Europe and the US, numerous single gigs and international festivals.

incite/ were awarded the following prizes for their performance:
